No, not the nice, sweet readers (well, mostly) of my blog.

Here's a website I found that compiles photographs that people send in to express their feelings and solidarity with the people of London. Very nice, very...uplifting:

We're Not Afraid

When we're not afraid, it's time for you terrorist wankers to be - be very, very afraid.

(more babelicious-looking, er, babes below)

Ok, I know that I'm about nine days late for the anniversary of the British handover of Hong Kong to China, but as a belated commemoration, here is Alice Patten, one of the daughters of Hong Kong's last British governor Chris Patten, courtesy of this site.

Looks quite fetching in an evening gown, wouldn't you say?

....And in white.

Whoever thought an English girl called 'Alice' would make it into my blog?

Happy belated anniversary!

From China to the neighbours' antics: Japanese schoolgirl starlet and Russian reality TV

Part one

This is for all you people interested in Sino-Japanese relations:

Those of you who have been following the relatively recent China-Japan spats over the revisionism of certain Japanese school textbooks with regards to Japan's behaviour in China during the last Big One (i.e. World War II). There were demonstrations in China, which included the vandalising attacks on Japanese (or Japanese-themed) restaurants and businesses. Tensions were high.

Then came in 11-year-old Japanese girl Saaya Irie, whose photo of here in a bikini was posted on a Chinese Internet forum called... (more)

This is for all you Sinophiles out there with a predilection for women in uniform, via Jing: "I didn't know the Cultural Revolution could be so hot".

Yeah, right, whatever.

*WARNING: this post may cause severe hyper-ventilating of the Socialist kind*

The Communist Party of China government-owned Xinhua news agency's photo editors have published an underwear album for spring.

Wow, that was a mouthful. I'd have to catch my breath, but I think I can't really, once I click on the photo below to see the entire collection.

Thank you Danwei

State-sponsored terrorism - We remember Tiananmen Square

Today is the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre.

'Tian - an - men' means 'Gate of Heavenly Peace' in Chinese. But there was no peace that day, heavenly or otherwise.

Let us remember.

(photo with many thanks to Peking Duck)

I refuse to crack any stupid jokes or make cynical or snide comments today (or not too much, anyway).

Oh yeah, and if anyone wants the touristy, sanitsed version of Tiananmen Square, go to here.

Added 6 June: a poignant history of the Square, leading up to the 4th of June, by Jonathan Spence.

Check out this news story of American flight attendants stripping and putting out a sexy calendar in protest at their sacking.

This is their website, and there is further explanation here (curious web address though), with picures reproduced from there.

Tymoshenko under fire, dress-sense still unimpeachable

The 'democratic' Orange Revolution in Ukraine seems to ebbing in the throes of its aftermath.

It seems that the prime minister, Yulia Tymoshenko, is finding herself "under fire".

If you've been following the news, she was an opposition minister in the former (Russia-backed) Ukrainian government. That was after she left the commercial sector as a corporate oligarch, and before she became the current prime minister.

(Still following me? Good.)

Kiev Euphoria Sliding into Disillusionment - "Her tactics, critics say, are reminiscent of the authoritarian government she helped... (more)

Miss Tibet Tourism World 2005

*Ahem* Back to regular programming *ahem*

This is from one of the more obscure international beauty pageants, Miss Tourism World. It was held in, of all places, Zimbabwe.

Her name is Tashi Yangchen, and she is Miss Tibet Tourism World.

She's the pink centre of the new Oreos (just the colours of the dresses!)

The reason why she's in this blog is because even tourism beauty queens are not spared from political controversy, earlier this year when the pageant was held. Yangchen writes that:

"The day when we were supposed to leave for Victoria Falls and... (more)

Sexual slavery is NOT sexy

This is really sad.

The title of this article is "Sex slavery disregarded globally".

"Coercive labor is quite a delicate topic, and governments usually prefer to ignore its existence within their national borders."

Some highlights:

"A lot of people become victims of sex slavery as a result of fraud. Criminals attract women promising them high-paid jobs in foreign countries. Prostitutes recruited from migrants are considered laborers on the market of sexual services, whereas local prostitutes are valued at a higher extent. People, who use sexual services, say that they... (more)
